Methane

METHANE: THE SOURCE OF ORGANIC SUBSTANCES

Chemical symbol

CH4

Occurrence:

In the air

Boiling point:

- 161.5 °C

Freezing point:

- 182.5 °C

Chemical properties:

Methane is an odorless, colourless and transparent gas.

Methane is a source of hydrogen and several important organic chemicals. Methane reacts with steam at high temperatures to produce carbon monoxide and hydrogen; the latter is used in the production of ammonia as a fertilizer and explosives. Other valuable chemicals derived from methane include methanol, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride and nitromethane. Incomplete combustion of methane produces soot, which is widely used as a reinforcing agent in rubber used to make automobile tires.

Methane produced and released into the atmosphere will be absorbed by methane reservoirs, including soil, and methane oxidation in the troposphere (lowest atmospheric region). Most naturally produced methane is offset by its absorption into natural sinks. However, anthropogenic methane production can cause methane concentrations to increase faster than they can be compensated for by sinks. Since 2007, methane concentrations in Earth's atmosphere have increased by 6.8–10 parts per billion (ppb) per year. By 2022, atmospheric methane had reached 1908.61 ppb, about three times higher than pre-industrial levels, fluctuating at 600–700 ppb.
