Messer Group

Messer is the largest own-managed industrial gas company in the world, managed by Stefan Messer, grand-son of the founder.

Messer is active in over 35 countries mainly in Europe and Asia, with over 60 operating companies. The international activities are managed from Frankfurt am Main, whilst management of core technical functions – logistics, engineering, production and application technology – is undertaken
from Krefeld.

From acetylene to xenon, the Messer Group has one of the most diverse product portfolios on the market – the company produces industrial gases such as oxygen, nitrogen, argon, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, helium, shielding gases for welding, specialty gases, medical gases and many different gas mixtures.

The Messer Group has state-of-the-art research and competence centres in which it develops applied technologies for the use of gases in almost
every sector of industry, in food technology, medicine as well as research and science.

  1. 1898

    The beginning and rapid growth

    1898 - Adolf Messer founds Frankfurter Acetylen-Gas-Gesellschaft Messer & Cie. in Hoechst, as a manufacturer of acetylene generators and lighting appliances

    1903 - Ernst Wiss develops the first hydrogen - oxygen cutting torch at Griesheim-Elektron. This is followed by equipment and machinery for oxy-fuel welding and cutting.

    1908 - The first oxygen plant opens at Chemische Fabrick Griesheim-Elektron

  2. 1964

    Evolution into a global Enterprise

    1965 - Birth of Messer Griesheim GmbH under Hans Messer. Merger of Adolf Messer GmbH with parts of Knapsack-Griesheim AG belonging to Hoechst.

    1966 - Expansion into Western Europe and North America

    1990 - Expansion into Eastern and Central Europe

    1995 - Entry into China and rapid expansion

    2001 - Goldman Sachs funds and Allianz Capital Partners byt the Hoechst (Aventis) shares

  3. 2003

    The way forward, back into family ownership

    2004 - Founding of Messer Group GmbH: Messer is once again wholly owned by the Messer family

    2005 - The welding and cutting division is once again wholly owned by the Messer family

    2006 - Sales exceed one billion euros for the first time: Messer Group and Messer Eutectic Castolin. Expansion of activities in europe and Asia

    2008 - Founding of Messer Industriegase GmbH in Germany

    2011 - Move to join company headquarters in Bad Soden

    2014 - Tenth anniversary of the Messer Group GmbH

  4. 2015

    Expansion in ASEAN

    2016 - Expansion in ASEAN: New operating companies in Singapore and Malaysia

    2017 - Expansion in ASEAN: New operating companies in Thailand and Indonesia

    2018 - 120th anniversary of Messer
